The house and location

The Priory has been a residential care home in Ottery St Mary for many years. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the area, Ottery is 12 miles from Exeter and 5 miles from Honiton. It is a very attractive small town with an ancient and beautiful parish church, many buildings of architectural interest and everything a small town requires in the way of shops, banks and places to eat. The coast is not far away and there are numerous places of interest to visit nearby.

In 1772 Samuel Coleridge Taylor, the poet, was born at The Old School House in Ottery and references to the Coleridge family can be found around the town. A prolific writer, Coleridge is perhaps best remembered for his poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan.

The Priory is a spacious Queen Anne house (Grade II listed) with views to the parish church. The house has been extended over the years and has an interesting history having been at different times The King’s School for boys, the local magistrates’ court and the Ottery police station. The house has been refurbished and refreshed in recent years and further improvements are planned.
